Joseph Camberlan (1766, Antwerp – 1821, Tbilisi) a sculptor and architect, an Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1809). He studied at the Antwerp Academy and subsequently in Paris. In 1798, he returned to his homeland. From 1805, he worked in St. Petersburg. In 1816, he was appointed the Gubernia [Provincial] Architect of Georgia. In 1817, Camberlan, who had been a citizen of the Netherlands, attained Russian citizenship. He worked primarily as a sculptor. Together with others, he participated in the sculptural decoration of the Stock Exchange building and the Rostral Columns in St. Petersburg (1805–10, designed by architect Thomas de Thomon). He also drafted the project for the pediment of the Military School in St. Petersburg. In Tbilisi, his only known executed project is the residence of Princess Tekle. The architectural design (two facades) is dated March 27, 1819 (Old Style) and is preserved at the National Centre of Manuscripts.
