Sulkhan Tsintsadze State String Quartet of Georgia was founded in Tbilisi, initially as the Student String Quartet (1921), then as the “String Quartet of the Society of Young Georgian Musicians” (1924), in 1928, it was named “Tbilisi Conservatoire String Quartet”, and from 1944 it was called the Georgian State String Quartet. The first members of the quartet were V. Neuman-Barnabel, M. Dzidzishvili, G. Taktakishvili, Sh. Taktakishvili, and the next generation was represented by: B. Chiaureli, G. Khatiashvili, A. Begalishvili, G. Barnabishvili. With this ensemble, the quartet achieved success — it became a laureate of the Prague International Competition (1950), all four participants were awarded the USSR State Prize (1952).
In 1958, the ensemble was awarded the title of Honored Art Collective of Georgia. The members of the ensemble were People's Artists of Georgia, winners of the Shota Rustaveli State Prize (1992) and Z. Paliashvili Prize (1971), as well as winners of the L. Weiner International Competition of Musicians and Performers (Hungary) (1973): K. Vardeli (from 2017 G. Khaindrava), T. Batiashvili, N. Zhvania and O. Chubinishvili. The ensemble's repertoire includes classical and contemporary quartet music, as well as quartet works by Georgian composers. The quartet toured many countries. From 1993, at the invitation of L. Isakadze, the quartet performed as part of a chamber orchestra in Germany. In 1991, it was named after S. Tsintsadze.
