Philippe Avril was a French Jesuit missionary of the 17th–18th centuries. In 1685, he was ordered to enter China secretly, but failed. Over the period of 6 years he visited Syria, Kurdistan, Georgia (1686), Armenia, Iran and Russia. In 1692, he published a description of his travels, which contains information about the countries of Caucasus, including Georgia (about the liberation of Archil of Imereti, who was captured in Akhaltsikhe, and etc.).
