Baratashvili Lineage

Baratashvili was a noble family in Georgia in the 15th–19th centuries.

Barata Kachibaidze (Kachibadze) was the lineage progenitor. His children, who lived in the second half of the 15th century, still bore the surname Kachibadze, but their descendants were called Baratashvili from the end of the 15th century.

By the end of the 15th century, the Baratashvili estate, Sabaratiano, mainly included the Algeti, Ktsia and Mashavera valleys (other feudal lords also owned lands in these valleys). They owned hundreds of villages, had approximately 250–300 nobles and 2500–3000 peasant households. The center of the estate was Samshvilde, they also had fortresses and palaces in Dmanisi, Darbaschala, Tbisi, Enageti and others.

Their ancestral monasteries and cemetery were the Fitareti and Gudarekhi monasteries, the churches of Dmanisi Sioni and the village of Kedi.

The Baratashvili family was one of the first among the five noble families of Kartli in the 16th–17th centuries and played a prominent role in the political life of the Kingdom of Kartli. The representatives of the Baratashvili family were the leading military district — soldiers of Somkhiti-Sabaratiano. They often held the titles of majordomos, judges and others.

Baratashvili family was demoted from the second half of the 17th century and priority was given to the Kaflanishvili family. Famous representatives of the Baratashvili family were: Barata Baratashvili, Mikheil Baratashvili, Nikoloz Baratashvili, Sulkhan Baratashvili and others.
