G. Aleksi-Meskhishvili 

 

Aleksi-Meskhishvili Giorgi (b. March 2, 1941, Tbilisi) is a scenographer, painter, People's Artist of Georgia (1988) and USSR State Prize laureate (1979).

He graduated from the Tbilisi State Art Academy (1967). He is a set designer at Rustaveli Theatre (since 1977) and Z. Paliashvili State Opera and Ballet Theatre (since 1986). He made sets for: T. Williams' The Glass Menagerie (1970), A. Sumbatashvili’s Betrayal (1974), B. Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle (1975), M. Shatrov's Blue Horses on Red Grass (1980), P. Calderon's Life Is a Dream (1992) at the Rustaveli State Theatre; J. Ioseliani's Takimaskhara (1973), L. Tabukashvili's Dzveli Vali (Old Debt) (1978), C. Dickens' Great Expectations (1979) at the Marjanishvili State Theatre; G. Kancheli's Da Ars Musika (And There Is Music) (1984), Z. Paliashvili's Abesalom and Eteri (1986), J. Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera (1988) at the Paliashvili State Opera and Ballet Theatre; W. Shakespeare's As You Like It (1981) at the Düsseldorf Drama Theatre; M. Javakhishvili's Jakos Khiznebi (Jaqo's Dispossessed) (1983) at the Moscow Art Theatre; M. Shatrov's The Peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (1988) at the Moscow Vakhtangov Theatre and others. He works in interior design [Gobelins (1985, House-Retreat of Composers, Borjomi), Pano (1987, Tbilisi Puppet Theatre, Tbilisi)] and in cinema adaptation - Journey of a Young Composer (1985), Ashik-Kerib (1988; awarded the European Cinema Prize "Oscar" in 1989) and others. In various creative works, he demonstrates deep knowledge and rich artistic imagination.
