Akhalgori Treasure

Akhalgori treasure is an archaeological monument of the early antiquity.

It was found in 1908 in the Ksani valley, near the village of Sadzeguri (Akhalgori Municipality). Eqvtime Takaishvili collected the items and bought them for the former Museum of Caucasus. The Akhalgori treasure is the inventory of a woman's luxurious tomb.

The treasure included 5 or 6 horse harnesses, metal, bone, vitreous and stone jewelry, tableware, ritual items, and more. Most of them are local products and confirm the high quality of artistic craft in the middle of the 1st millennium BC.

The gold jewelry from the Akhalgori treasure is a great example of Georgian goldsmithing of the early antiquity. Among the silver items, the omphalos bowls, which were widespread in the cultural world of that time, are worth noting. The harness of the horse includes various gold and silver plates, bronze rings and bridles. Akhalgori treasure-type bridles have been found only in Georgia so far. Gold objects show traces of the influence of the Achaemenid culture. It is kept in the Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia.
