Winfried Boeder (b. April 2, 1937, Arweiler – d. December 24, 2023, Oldenburg) was a German scientist, Kartvelologist.
He studied at the universities of Freiburg and Hamburg, was a Privatdozent at the University of Hamburg (1967), professor at the University of Oldenburg (1973), member of the editorial board of the magazine “Revue des Etudes Géorgiennes et caucasiennes” (1985), member of the European Society of Linguists (The Societas Linguistica Europaea) (1968).
Boeder researched the grammatical structure of Georgian and other Kartvelian languages. His first works in Kartvelology — “Zur Subjektiven Version des georgischen Verbs” and “Über die Versionen des georgischen Verbs” are very important. He has interesting research on the graphic structure of the old Georgian alphabet. In his opinion, the creator of the Georgian alphabet was guided by the geometric principle. His assumption that the graphemes corresponding to specific Georgian consonant phonemes are arranged according to Greek linguistic thought is also noteworthy. Boeder studied the rules of writing with contractions in Old Georgian, as well as Old Georgian punctuation. He translated the works of T. Gamkrelidze, G. Machavariani, and G. Klimov into German. He was interested in Georgian folklore.
