Aleksandr (Ivanovich) Baryatinsky (May 2 (14), 1815 – February 25 (March 9), 1879, Geneva) was a Russian army General Field Marshal (1859).
He was an active participant in the Caucasian Wars (from 1835). During the Crimean War, he served as the chief of staff of the Caucasian Corps, and from 1856 to 1862, he was the Commander-in-Chief and the Tsar’s representative in the Caucasus. He headed the suppression of the national liberation struggle of the North Caucasian people. He broke Shamil's resistance and captured him on August 25, 1859, in Aul Gunib.
