Bitsadze Andria

Andria Bitsadze (May 9, 1916, village of Tskhrukveti, now part of the Chiatura region – September 6, 1994, Moscow) was a Georgian mathematician. He was a full member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1969) and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1958). He received a Doctorate in Physics and Mathematics (1951), became a professor (1959), and was awarded the title of Distinguished Scientist of Georgia (1962).

Bitsadze graduated from Tbilisi State University (TSU) in 1940. He worked at the A. Razmadze Institute of Mathematics at the Georgian Academy of Sciences and the Tbilisi State University (1940–48), the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Novosibirsk State University (1959–71). He became the head of the Department of Partial Differential Equations at the V. Steklov Institute of Mathematics (from 1971), head of the Department at the Moscow Institute of Engineering Physics (1971–78), and scientific leader and director of the I. Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics at TSU (1978–83). He was a professor at Moscow State University (1984).

His major works focus on the theory of elliptic partial differential equation and systems, mixed-type and composite-type equations, the theory of hyperbolic systems, the theory of multidimensional singular integral equations, the theory of nonlocal boundary value problems, and more. He discovered the exact solutions for a wide class of quasi-linear equations and systems, and revealed the structural properties of these solutions.

He received state awards and was awarded N. Muskhelishvili Prize (1982)
