Borena the Poet

Borena was an 11th-century female poet. She wrote a hymn dedicated to the Virgin Mary, composed in refined rhymes in iambic meter, inscribed on the back of an icon of the Virgin Mary (Svaneti, the church of Lenjeri). In the fifth stanza of the hymn, the author herself is mentioned: "Oh Virgin, remember me, Borena the cursed."

Some researchers consider her to be the wife of King Bagrat IV, Queen Borena (11th century). There is also an opinion that the author of the iambic hymn was not an 11th-century female poet, but the wife of Tsotne Dadiani, who lived in the 13th century.
