Maggio Francesco-Maria (1612–1686), Italian missionary, the Theatian monk. In 1637 he arrived in Gori on the invitation of Catholic missionary Pietro don Avitabile. He stayed in Georgia for 8 years. He worked first in Gori, then in Samagrelo and Guria. The result of his stay in Georgia was his book - Composition About the Oriental Languages That Are Spoken in Different Regions of Georgia. The first part of the book offers Grammar Rules of Georgian, that Is, Iberian Spoken Language. It is the Grammar of Georgian Language, written in Latin. Maggio’s Georgian Grammar was the first and only published work in Latin, which satisfied European scientific and informative interest in Georgian tongue, one of the oldest languages world over.
