Nino Burjanadze (b. July 16, 1964, Kutaisi) was the Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia from November 2001 to June 2008. She was the Acting President of Georgia twice, the first time from November 2003 to January 2004 and then again from November 2007 to January 2008.
She graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University (TSU) (1986), she was a candidate of Legal Sciences of the Postgraduate Course of the Department of International Law of Lomonosov Moscow State University (1990). In 1991–1992 she was an expert consultant to the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Georgia, and in 1992–1995 to the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia. In 1995–1999 and in 1999–2001, she was a member of the Parliament of Georgia of the 4th and 5th convocations. In 1998–1999, she was the Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal Issues and Legality of the Parliament. In 2000, she was elected as the Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. In 2000–2001, she chaired the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament. In 1999–2002, Burjanadze was the Co-Chairman of the Parliamentary Cooperation Committee of the European Union and Georgia. From 2004, she was the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. From November 2, 2003, she participated in the elections as part of the election bloc “Burjanadze-Democrats” and was one of the leaders of the Rose Revolution.
In 2004–2008, she was a member of the 6th convocation of the Parliament of Georgia (Kutaisi majoritarian, electoral bloc, “Burjanadze-Democrats”). She was a leading figure in the ruling party, the United National Movement. The dispersal of the November 2007 rallies caused the first rift between Burjanadze and President Saakashvili. In 2008, Burjanadze founded the “Democratic Movement – United Georgia” party and is its chairman. In April and May 2009, the party was one of the organizers of the rallies demanding Saakashvili's resignation.
She is the author of scientific publications and a monograph.
