T. Somkhishvili

Tamaz Somkhishvili (born June 22, 1957, in Tbilisi), businessman and philanthropist. In 1994, he graduated from Tyumen State University. Candidate of Economic Sciences (2002). For years, he worked in oil extraction and refining sector in Russia. Implemented important projects in European countries, including charitable ones to support the Georgian diaspora. His name is associated with the purchase of the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ in London, which was handed over to the Patriarchate of Georgia.

In Georgia, along with entrepreneurial activities, he made a significant contribution to the establishment of Saint Andrew Georgian University of the Patriarchate of Georgia. He financed a number of infrastructure projects, including the construction of the park and memorial dedicated to Georgia's National Hero, Zurab Iarajuli, in the Tianeti municipality.

 

The Education, science and technology Development Fund ("For the Success of Tomorrow") created under his sponsorship has helped many talented young Georgians.

 

Under T. Somkhishvili's sponsorship, large-scale exhibitions of works by Niko Pirosmani were held at the Albertina Museum in Vienna in 2019, as well as at the Vincent van Gogh Museum in Arles (France). For these exhibitions, the famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando specially designed the "The Table of Pirosmani."

 

He was the President of the Georgian Shooting Federation.

 

He has been supporting scientific and encyclopedic projects.

 

The Russian Orthodox Church awarded him the Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh. He was also awarded the V. Tatishchev Prize.
