Gigineishvili Manana

Gigineishvili Manana (born July 17, 1933, Tbilisi), a literary scholar, translator, candidate of philological sciences (1970). In 1956, she graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Tbilisi State University, specializing in Georgian language and literature. From 1962 to 1998, she was a senior research fellow at the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature; from 1975 to 1977, she was the senior scientific editor of the Georgian Encyclopedia; and from 1992 to 2004, she was a member of the Parliament of Georgia (III-IV-V convocations).

Her scientific interests include the history of ancient Georgian literature and translation from Spanish, French, German, English, and Russian. Her translations include: Gustave Flaubert's Herodiade and The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitable (1967), the novel Salambo (co-translated with K. Kilarjian, 2014), Juan Ramón Jiménez's Platero and I (1997), Gabriela Mistral's poems in prose and short stories (2008), Glory to You! (Hymns of God) (2008), Anne Bernes' The Memoirs of Pilate Pontius (2015), Kahlil Gibran's Jesus, the Son of Man; The Prophet; The Garden of the Prophet; Songs (2014), Hymns of the Essenes (2018), and Thomas Stearns Eliot's The Rock (2021). She is a co-author of the Chrestomathy of Old Georgian Literature for the 9th-grade textbook (Chrestomathy, 1999), Teacher's Book (2004), and the extensive work Old Georgian Literature (2018).

She has received the Saguramo (2006) and the Saba prizes (2019).

She was awarded the Order of Honor (2003).
