Gregory Pakourianos
Gregory Pakourianos (1020s – 1086, Bulgaria) was a Georgian military and political figure in 11th century. He was the Grand Domestic of two provinces of the Byzantine Empire – East (South Caucasus) and West (Balkans). In 1064, he held the position of co-governor in the eastern administrative unit of the Byzantine Empire – Theme of Iberia (residence in Ani); during the campaign of Alp Arslan in Georgia (1064) he was one of the heads of the Ani defense. Then he was transferred to the Balkans, and in 1071, he became the govenor of Theme of Iberia and Domestic of the East again (residence – Theodosiopolis (Karnu-kalaki)). Gregory Pakourianos was involved in a coup at the Byzantine imperial court in 1081, as a result of which Nikephoros III Botaneiates was defeated and Alexios I Komnenos ascended to the throne. For this, he was appointed Grand Domestic of the West (residence in Adrianople).
In 1083, Gregory Pakourianos founded a Georgian monastery in Petritsoni (Bachkovo, Bulgaria), to which he donated a large amount of real estate and funds. He drew up a typikon (charter) for the monastery, where he talked about his origins, family, and his brother — Magister officiorum Abas. The typikon was written in Greek and Georgian. The copies of his later manuscripts (12th–13th centuries) have been preserved. According to the Georgian copy of the manuscript, the typikon was written in Greek and Georgian, and according to the Greek copy of the manuscript, in Greek, Georgian, and Armenian. He died in a battle with the Pechenegs. He is buried in the crypt of the Petritsoni monastery, where a fresco depicting Gregory Pakourianos and his brother is preserved (11th century).
