Among Grillparzer’s internationally renowned tragedies, "The Golden Fleece" ("Das goldene Vlies", 1818–1821) is of particular interest for Georgians. The tragedy consists of three parts: “The Guest-Friend" ("Der gastfreund"), "The Argonauts" ("Die Argonauten"),"Medea" ("Medea").
The play is written in free verse. In this trilogy, the writer sheds light on the legends of the Argonauts, the myths and tales about the Golden Fleece, and the historical-mythological stories related to Colchis. The play was performed many times on the stages of theaters across various countries. Its premiere took place in Vienna on March 25, 1821, bringing the author great popularity. From the 1920s onward, this play was frequently performed in theaters throughout German-speaking countries.
