Avtandil Gunia (b. September 27, 1912, Tbilisi – d. October 2, 1997, Tbilisi) was an economist, full member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1979), Doctor of Economic Sciences (1962), professor (1966). In 1939 he graduated from the Moscow G. Plekhanov Institute of National Economy (present-day Plekhanov Russian University of Economics). In 1953, he was the head of the Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia, from 1953 to 1957, he was the Minister of Culture of Georgia, in 1957, he became the head of the Department of the Institute of Economics and Law of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, in 1960 — the deputy director of the same institute for scientific research. From 1976 to 1991, he was the director, and from 1991 until his death, he was the honorary director.
Gunia was the chairman of the Coordination Council in the field of economics, a member of the Georgian State Prize Committee and the Scientific Council for Awarding Doctoral Degrees. Gunia's scientific works covered the issues of political economy, industrial economics, and the development of the Georgian economy. His contribution to scientific research in the fields of regional economy and social infrastructure in Georgia is significant. He received state awards, including the Order of Honor of Georgia (1997). He is buried in the Saburtalo Pantheon of Georgian Writers and Public Figures.
