Gurgenidze Bukhuti

Gurgenidze, Bukhuti (November 13, 1933, town of Surami – May 23, 2008, Tbilisi) was a chess player and the first Georgian international grandmaster (1970). He was named USSR Master of Sports (1955), International Master (1968), Honored Coach of Georgia (1968), and Honored Coach of the USSR (1969).

Gurgenidze was an eleven-time champion of Georgia (1958–1965, 1968, 1970, 1973) and participated nine times in the USSR Chess Championships (his best result was 7th–8th place in 1958). He took part four times in the World Student Team Championships, winning twice as a member of the USSR national team (1957, 1958). He won several international tournaments, including in Sofia (1959, shared 1st–3rd places), Tbilisi (1965, 1st place), Batumi (1966, shared 1st–4th places), Olomouc (1976, 1st place), Tbilisi 4th V. Karseladze Memorial (1976, 1st place), Hradec Králové (1977–78, shared 1st–2nd place). He served as the coach of N. Aleksandria (1966–1976), Vice-President of the Georgian Chess Federation, and Director of the Chess Palace (1989–1994). He received several state awards, including the Order of Honor (1996).
