Gurieli Nino

Gurieli, Nino (born December 7, 1961, Tbilisi) is a chess player. Her titles include International Grandmaster (1979), USSR Master of Sports (1976), International Master (1978), President of the Georgian Chess Federation (2002–2004).

She graduated from Tbilisi State University in 1982. She was the champion of Georgia (1976, 1992) and participated nine times in the USSR Championships (best results: 2nd place in 1981, shared 3rd–4th places in 1985). Since 1978, she has competed in Women’s World Chess Championships. In zonal tournaments: Frunze (1978, 1st place), Chernigov (1985, shared 2nd–4th places); in interzonal tournaments: Alicante (1979, 3rd place), Tbilisi (1982, shared 4th–6th places), Zheleznovodsk (1985, 7th place), Kuala Lumpur (1990, shared 3rd–4th places). In the quarterfinal match of the Candidates Tournament in 1980, she was defeated by N. Gaprindashvili. In 1997, she participated in the Candidates Tournament again. She was a member of the Georgian national team at the Women’s Chess Olympiad, winning gold medals (1992, 1994, 1996) and a silver medal (2000), and served as the captain of the winning team in 2008. She took first place in international tournaments including Bydgoszcz (1978, 1979), Bad Kissingen (1981), Sofia (1983), Plovdiv (1986), Belgrade (1986, 1990), Havana (1988), among others. She was awarded the Order of Honor (1994) and the Order of Vakhtang Gorgasali, 3rd Class (2001).
