Suttner, Artur Gundaccar von (21. II. 1850 – 10. XII. 1902) Austrian writer who resided in Georgia for nine years (1876–85) alongside his spouse, B. Von Suttner. He dedicated almost his entire work to Georgia and Caucasus. Notable among his novels are Darejan (second edition 1896, the first remains undiscovered), Aznauri (1886), Shamil, The Ajarians (both 1890), and The Circassians (1898). Georgia in the second half of the 19th century is depicted in his collection of stories, Children of the Caucasus (in 2 volumes, 1890–91). The couple took a profound interest in The Knight in the Panther's Skin (which they translated into German and French, though the translations have not been recovered). Prior to commencing the translation in 1884, Suttner published a series of significant articles in the newspaper Kavkaz, which were reprinted that same year in Iveria under the title "A Foreigner's Perspective on 'The Knight in the Panther's Skin': Regarding the Translation of the Poem into the French Language." This constituted one of the earliest works by a foreign author concerning Rustaveli.
