Tahmasp I

Tahmasp I

Tahmasp I (b. March 3, 1513, Shahabad, near Isfahan – d. May 14, 1576, Qazvin), Shah of Iran (1524–1576), a representative of the Safavid dynasty, son of Ismail I. He ascended the throne at the age of 10, when the state was ruled by the leaders of the Qizilbash tribes. Later, Tahmasp I fought against them and strengthened the central government. During his rule, in 1514–1555, the so-called First Iranian-Ottoman War was fought for the control over South Caucasus and other countries bordering it. He annexed to the Safavid Empire the independent political units of Northern Azerbaijan, Shirvan (1538) and Sheki (1551). Tahmasp I invaded Georgia four times (in 1541, 1547, 1551 and 1554). During the third campaign, the Shah personally witnessed the destruction and plundering of the city and church of Vardzia by the Qizilbash tribes. The records of the conversation between Tahmasp I and the Ottoman ambassadors are of interest.
