Tbilisi Uezd

Tbilisi uezd (Tiflis uezd), an administrative-territorial unit in the central part of the Tbilisi Governorate of the Russian Empire. It included historical Kvemo Kartli, the upper course of the Algeti River, the Garayazi plain, and Garekakheti. On September 23, 1803, by order of the emperor, the Lori uezd was transformed into Tbilisi uezd. It also included Bambaki, Borchaly, Kazakh, Shamshadili, and Shurageli. According to the decree of April 10, 1840, they (except for Borchaly) were transferred to the newly created Elizavetpol uezd, which was part of the Georgia-Imeretia Governorate. In 1868, when the Elizavetpol Governorate was created, these territories were assigned to this governorate.

In April 1840, according to the Senate's decree, the Tbilisi uezd became part of the Georgia-Imeretia Governorate and was divided into the districts of Otkhgori, Dusheti, Tbilisi, and Borchaly.

On December 14, 1846, Tbilisi uezd became a part of Tbilisi Governorate. On March 16, 1862, new administrative-territorial units, Lori and Trialeti prefectures, were established. In December 1867, Dusheti district was separated from Tbilisi uezd and Dusheti uezd was created.

The creation of new settlements in the eastern part of Tbilisi uezd led to the creation of another new administrative-territorial unit – Garayazi prefecture, which was confirmed by a cameral census in 1873.

In 1870, Lori, Trialeti and Borchaly prefectures were separated from Tbilisi uezd, from which an independent unit – the temporary administrative division of Shulaveri was created. It was later transformed into Borchaly uezd. When the division of uezds into districts was restored, Tbilisi uezd was divided into the Sartichala, Tbilisi, and Garayazi districts. Tbilisi uezd was abolished in 1930.
