A. Khachaturian

Khachaturian Aram (1903–1978), Armenian composer, conductor, pedagogue, public figure. People’s Artist of the USSR (1954), Full Member of Armenian Academy of Sciences (1963), People’s Artist of Georgian SSR (1973). He was born in Tbilisi. In 1934, he graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire (N. Miaskovsky’s musical arrangement   class).  His concertos for piano and especilly, concertos for violin, brought him blaze of publicity.

A. Khachaturian’s wellknown ballets are Gaiane (1942) and Spartacus (1954). He composed music for plays and films as well. Along with Armenian folklore, Georgian urban folklore influenced A. Khachaturian’s music. He was a frequent guest of Tbilisi. He was on a friendly footing with Georgian composers Bidzina Kvernadze, Gia Kancheli, Jansug Kakhidze.

A. Khachaturian was an honorary member of foreign Academis of Art, Laureate of Lenin Prize (1959), State Prize of the USSR (1941, 1943, 1946, 1950) and State Prize of Armenian SSR (1965).

Aram Khachaturian died in Moscow. He was buried in Yerevan.
