Giorgi Ioseliani

Giorgi Ioseliani (December 20, 1917, Tbilisi – September 6, 2005, ibid.) was a Georgian surgeon. He was a Corresponding Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1996) and a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1984). He also held memberships in the Georgian Academy of Medical Sciences (1994),  a Doctor of Medical Sciences (1959), Professor (1961), and Honored Scientist of Georgia (1967). He was a laureate of the State Prize of Georgia (1975).

He graduated from the Tbilisi State Medical Institute (TSMI) in 1941, subsequently serving in the active military from 1941 to 1943. He worked as a surgeon at the Tbilisi Emergency Hospital and as an assistant in the Department of Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery at TSMI (1943–46; 1948–50). From 1946 to 1947, he was a surgeon at the N. Sklifosovsky Research Institute for Emergency Medicine in Moscow. Beginning in 1950, he served as a Senior Scientific Researcher at the Tbilisi Scientific Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Surgery, where he subsequently held the positions of Scientific Secretary (1951–57), Deputy Director (1957–74), Director (1974–88), and Honorary Director from 1988 onward.

Ioseliani’s scientific research addresses the surgical treatment of the digestive organs, the cardiovascular system, and malignant tumors, as well as organ and tissue transplantation, blood transfusion, anesthesia, and related medical complexities.

He was elected as the Honorary Chairman of the Surgical Society of Georgia (1999) and Chairman of the Surgical Society of Tbilisi (2000).

Ioseliani is the author of numerous scientific works, including 8 monographs.

He was the recipient of state awards, including the Order of Honor (1997).
