Christian Monuments of Georgian Origin in Ingushetia

The Christian monuments of Georgian origin in Ingushetia have been discovered and studied by researchers in Ingushetia since the end of the eighteenth century. These include: ruins of former churches and temples (the temple of Tkobia-Yerda [Tkhaba-Erdy], the churches of Albi-Yerdi [Albi-Erdy], Targemi [Targim], Maghi-Yerdi [Mago-Erdy], and others); monuments of monumental and minor plastic arts; examples of ecclesiastical wall paintings; Christian burials of local inhabitants; and Old Georgian written monuments of liturgical content, as well as denoting the local names (predominantly from the tenth to eleventh centuries and the twelfth to fourteenth centuries). Alongside historical, linguistic (Christian vocabulary, onomastics, toponymy), folkloric, and ethnographic materials, they show the high level of the spread of Christianity in medieval Ingushetia, its chronological range, and the existence of the Georgian divine service, Georgian language, and writing among the population.

The Christian cultural monuments present in Ingushetia clearly indicate the close historical relations between medieval Georgia and Ingushetia (historical "Durdzuketi" [Dzurdzuketia]), which were formed from the end of the early Middle Ages by immanent processes occurring within the political, socio-economic, and cultural spheres of the peoples of the Caucasus (feudal-formational shifts, defense against powerful neighboring states, possession of Transcaucasian routes, economic ties between the mountains and the plains, indigenous ethno-cultural relations, ethno-psychological constitution, and others), as well as by the Caucasian policy directed by the Georgian state. As a result of these factors, the Christian religion and culture emerged as the foundation of the ensuing common Caucasian statehood.
