Gumilev Nikolay

Gumilev Nikolay (1886-1921), Russian poet, founder and theorist of acmeism movement in Russia. Born in the town of Kronstadt. In 1900 the family of the Gumilevs moved to Tbilisi and settled there due to the weak health of their elder son Dmitry. At first he studied at Tbilisi boys’ classical school No. 2; later, starting from 1901 – at Tbilisi boys’ classical school No. 1. Three years spent in Tbilisi proved to be beneficial to N. Gumilev; he acquired new friends; gained self-confidence, independence and feeling of freedom. This is confirmed by the fact that when the family of the Gumilevs left for the Ryazan Province to spend the summer there, Nikolay stayed alone in Tbilisi. In 1901 he published his first poem Я в лес бежал из городов in the newspaper Tbilissky Listok (Tbilisi Paper). He signed the poem in the name of K. Gumilev. In Tbilisi he used to write poems about Georgia and it’s beautiful nature.

In 1903 N. Gumilev and his family returned to Tsarskoe Selo. In 1910 he married poetess A. Gorenko (Ana Akhmatova). N. Gumilev was opposed to the October Revolution of 1917. In 1921 the Bolsheviks arrested him, accused him of counterrevolutionary conspiracy and sentenced him to death.

In 1921 Nikolay Gumilev was executed by shooting.
