Antokolsky Pavel

Pavel Antokolsky (b. July 1, 1896, St. Petersburg – d. October 16, 1978, Moscow) was a Russian poet and translator.

He came to Georgia for the first time in 1935. And then he became a frequent guest and a participant of important events of public and cultural life. He dedicated a cycle of poems, essays [Titsian Tabidze (1957), Simon Chikovani (1969), Karlo Kaladze (1965)] and literary-critical articles to Georgia.

He translated The Knight in the Panther's Skin (excerpts), the works of D. Guramishvili, A. Chavchavadze, N. Baratashvili, A. Tsereteli, G. Tabidze, T. Tabidze and other Georgian poets. Antokolsky's friendship with Georgian poets resulted in a great love for Georgian poetry and historical and cultural knowledge of Georgia. His verses and poems were translated by A. Abasheli, G. Abashidze, K. Kaladze, Sh. Nishnianidze and others.

He received state awards.
