Aragvi River

Aragvi is a river in East Georgia that passes through Kazbegi, Dusheti, and Mtskheta municipalities. The length of the river is 112 kilometers, while its basin covers an area of 2740 square kilometers. The Aragvi system is comprised of the following rivers: Aragvi of Mtiuleti (white), Aragvi of Gudamakari (black), Aragvi of Khevsureti, and Aragvi of Pshavi. The sources of water for Aragvi come from groundwater, rain, snowpacks, and glaciers. Aragvi adds around 1.8 million cubic liters of water to Mtkvari annually. Its water is used to irrigate the Mukhran-Saguramo valley. The Mukhrani channel comes from Aragvi. In the downstream area of Aragvi, there are the filtrates of Bulachauri, Natakhtari and Saguramo that provide drinking water to Tbilisi. In Aragvi gorge, near Zhinvali townlet, there is a Zhinvali hydroelectric station and reservoir that play an important role in supplying water to Tbilisi. Part of the Georgian Military Road passes along the Aragvi gorge.
