Necropolis of Asureti

Necropolis of Asureti is an archaeological monument of the ancient period (5th–4th centuries BC) in the southwest of the village of Asureti (Tetritskaro Municipality), in “Samachveti”. In 1966, short stone coffins (average size 0.6 X 1.0 m) were excavated (led by K. Kvizhinadze). Some of the tombs were destroyed and looted. The dead lay on their sides, with hands and legs crossed, their heads facing the west. Among the burial materials, clay products (red fired jugs, which were sometimes covered with red engobe, bowls, pots, etc.), bronze (bowls, bracelets, clasps, earrings, rings, bells, etc.), iron (spearheads, axes, knives, bracelets, rings, etc.) and silver (temple rings, earrings, rings) items are worth mentioning. Bones of cattle were found in abundance on top of the graves, which indicates the existence of the Agape rule in the region of Kvemo Kartli at that time.
