Asatiani Vladimir

Vladimir Asatiani (b. September 10, 1901, Fergana, present-day Uzbekistan — d. March 9, 1972, Tbilisi) was a biochemist, doctor of Biological Sciences, professor (1931), Honored Worker of Science of Georgia (1955). In 1923, he graduated from the Royal Experimental Agrochemical Institute of Perugia (Italy). He worked abroad in 1923–1926. From 1926, he worked at the Department of Organic and Physiological Chemistry of the Faculty of Medicine of Tbilisi State University (TSU) (from 1930, the department is at the Tbilisi State Medical University) and from 1948, he was the head of the Department of Organic and Forensic Chemistry of the Tbilisi Medical University. In 1931—1933, he was the deputy director and one of the founders of the Research Institute of Tea and Subtropical Cultures in Anaseuli; in 1937–1939 he was the director of the Scientific-Research Institute of Tuberculosis; from 1964, he was the director of the Institute of Pharmacochemistry of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Asatiani's main works (in Russian): Biochemical Photometry (1957), New Methods of Biochemical Photometry (1965), Enzymatic Methods of Analysis (1969; P. Melikishvili Prize, 1971), Errors in Metabolism (1972), etc. Asatiani laid the foundation for the chemistry of biologically active substances and biochemical pharmacology in Georgia. He was the chairman and one of the founders of the Biochemical Society of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, the chairman of the Pharmacological Committee of the Ministry of Health of Georgia and the Commission of Enzymes of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, a member of the main editorial boards of the Georgian Encyclopedia and the Great Medical Encyclopedia. He received state awards.
