de Besse Jean-Charles

Jean-Charles de Besse (b. before 1799 – d. after 1838) was a French scholar who studied the origins of the Hungarians.

He traveled to the Crimea and the Caucasus. In 1830, he was also in Tbilisi, from where he traveled first to Surami, and then to Western Georgia. He visited Kutaisi, Abasha, Khobi, Redut Kale (Kulevi). From Kulevi he returned to Vienna by sea and passed through Trabzon, Constantinople and Trieste. The main goal of Besse's journey was to discover traces of the migration of Hungarians and their life. In this regard, a large part of his works is dedicated to the linguistic and toponymic material of Georgia. de Besse also described Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Kulevi, Russians and Western Europeans living in the Caucasus, German colonies in the Caucasus, and etc.
