Hermann Buddensieg (b. June 3, 1893, Eisenach, Thuringia – d. 1976, Heidelberg) was a German poet and translator, author of poems, autobiographical works, monographs; He is known for his translations of A. Mickiewicz and Lithuanian classics. Buddensieg founded and was the editor of the literary and scientific journal “Mickiewicz-Blätter”.
He was very interested in Georgia and Rustaveli's poem. He visited Georgia twice. In 1970, he published excerpts from The Knight in the Panther's Skin in the bimonthly magazine of the German Academy of Arts “Sinn und Form” (No. 6), which was dedicated to Georgia, and he published the prologue in the Anthology of Georgian Poetry published by the Berlin publishing house “Volk und Welt” (the translation was also periodically published in the magazine “Mickiewicz-Blätter”). Buddensieg worked on the translation of the poem in 1966–1972, and it was published in its full form in 1976 by the publishing house “Sakartvelo”.
In 1977, the publishing house “Ganatleba” published Buddensieg’s translation of the cycle of poems In the Footsteps of Rustaveli by I. Abashidze. He also wrote the poem Rustaveli, which was published in the journal “Mickiewicz-Blätter” (1976, No. 1) and was also included in his translation of The Knight in the Panther's Skin.
