Gigauri Giorgi (November 23, 1924, Kazbegi – 2009, Tbilisi) was a forester-engineer, a full member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1993), corresponding member of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1990) and Doctor of Agricultural Sciences (1973).
In 1948, he graduated from the Georgian Agricultural Institute (now the Agricultural University). From 1954, he taught at the same institution (becoming a professor in 1978). From 1970 to 1980, he served as the first deputy minister of Forestry in Georgia. Since 1980, he was the director of the V. Gulisashvili Institute of Mining and Forestry Research of Georgia. He studied the origin, development, and formation patterns of Georgia’s forests. He explored the characteristics of mountain forest valuation. Gigauri developed the economic zoning scheme for Georgia’s forests. He determined the optimal cutting age, maturity limits, and principles for determining the annual timber utilization volume under selective forestry conditions for mountain forests (such as beech, pine, fir, spruce, and others). He is the author of monographs on forestry, forest management and valuation, as well as a student textbook on forestry.
Giorgi Gigauri won the State Prize of Georgia in 1985. He received several state awards.
