Giorgadze Tamaz

Giorgadze Tamaz (born January 9, 1947, Kutaisi) is a chess player. International Grandmaster (1977) and USSR Master of Sports (1967). He graduated from the Georgian Polytechnic Institute (1970). Giorgadze’s first coach was D. Chiradze. He was the Champion of Tbilisi (1968), two-time Champion of Georgia (1972, 1973), and a three-time participant in the USSR Championships (best result – 4th place, unbeaten, 1978). He was a two-time Champion of the USSR Students' Championship (1966, 1969), winner of the World Student Universiade, as part of the USSR team (Dresden, 1969), two-time European Champion among clubs, as a member of "Burevestnik" (1976, 1979). At the 7th Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR, he took 1st place on board 1 as part of the Georgian team (1979). He was A. Karpov's coach (1980–86), coach of the Spanish Olympic team (1986–92), and Georgia's Honored Coach. He is a winner of many international tournaments.

He was awarded the Order of Honor in 2003.
