Johann Gottlieb Georgi

Johann Gottlieb Georgi (b. December 31, 1729, Kolberg, Pomerania – d. November 13, 1802, St. Petersburg) was a German chemist, geographer, botanist, professor.

In 1769, he moved to St. Petersburg. He participated in the expeditions of the Russian Academy to Siberia and other parts of the world, organized under the leadership of Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811). In 1776, he published the book The Description of all nationalities living in the Russian Empire in St. Petersburg, which, for some reason, also contains information about the Georgians: their settlement area, geographical environment, economy, social life and religion.

The author especially notes that despite living in a Muslim environment for a long period of time, the Georgians preserved Christianity, language, and the manner of life.

Literary work: Beschreibung aller Nationen des Russichen Reichs, ihrer Lebensart, Religion, Gebräuche, St.-Petersburg, 1776.
