Ephrem Matskvereli

Ephrem Matskvereli — Bishop of Atskuri, circa 845–885. He was born in Kartli into a noble family and was raised in the Monastery of Khandzta, where he became a disciple of Grigol Khandzteli (Gregory of Khandzta). Later, he continued his monastic life at the Monastery of Nedzvi. In historical sources, he is referred to as “Great Ephrem.”

Ephrem Matskvereli was a highly respected church figure. He peacefully dissolved a powerful faction that had arisen against Catholicos Arsenius I, reconciling the Catholicos with the dissatisfied bishops and with Guaram Mampali, the local ruler.

Through Ephrem’s efforts, the Georgian Church received from Patriarch Sergius of Jerusalem (843–859) the right to consecrate myron (holy chrism) within Kartli itself—previously, it had to be brought from Jerusalem.

He was buried in the Monastery of Atskuri and was canonized as a saint. His remembrance day is celebrated on April 17 (April 30 in the modern calendar).
