Fogel Boris (1871-1961), German painter. Born in Temir- Khan Shura in Dagestan, North Caucasus. In 1878, after the death of his father, he moved to Tbilisi together with his mother. He lived in Tbilisi till 1934. He studied at Tbilisi Boys’ Classical School No.1. From 1891, he continued his education at the Law Department of Moscow University. In 1896 – 97 he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris; in 1897 – 1902, he mastered the skill of painting at the Academy of Arts in Petersburg. After graduation, he returned to Tbilisi and actively participated almost in all art exhibitions. In 1925, he created a big series of paintings depicting Tbilisi cityscape for the exhibition at the Municipal Museum. In 1928 B. Fogel prepared a new series titled ‘New Tbilisi’ for the exhibition at the same museum. Among his works there were paintings seascapes and views of Batumi. B. Fogel was engrossed in pedagogic activity. Initially, he taught painting at Tbilisi classical school No.1 for girls; as from 1902 he trained students in painting at the art school of ‘Caucasian Society for Promotion of Fine Arts’. In 1911 – 14 he taught painting at N. Sklifasovsky’s ‘Painting Courses’, where many Georgian artists mastered the skill of painting. In 1934 he moved to Leningrad (St. Petersburg) though he kept permanent contacts with Georgia. In Tbilisi B. Fogel’s works are displayed at the State Historic- Ethnographic Museum of Tbilisi, named after I. Grishashvili and National Museum of Art; in Petersburg, they are kept at the Russian Museum and private collections.
