Tabor Monastery of the Transfiguration

Tabor Monastery of the Transfiguration was located on Mount Tabor on the right bank of the River Tsavkisistskali. The monastery belonged to the early Christian era (no later than the 6th century). It has not survived to the present day. It was first mentioned in a document drafted in 1392: “... beyond Tbilisi, a fig ravine flows down to the Tabor Monastery along the water's edge...” (Georgian Monuments of Law, vol. 1, Tbilisi, 1970). The monastery is also mentioned on Vakhushti of Kartli's plan of 1735. According to P. Ioseliani, “... и на плоской ея вершине была построена церковь Преображения Господня...”. Mount Tabor in Jerusalem held a special place in the earthly life of Jesus Christ. The mountain was renamed Tabor after the construction of the Monastery of the Transfiguration. In 2001, a new Monastery of the Transfiguration was built on Mount Tabor in Tbilisi.
