Revaz Tabukashvili (b. August 2, 1927, Tbilisi – d. August 3, 1990, Tbilisi), writer, playwright, translator, director, Honored Artist of Georgia (1967), winner of the Shota Rustaveli State Prize (1986). He graduated from the Moscow Institute of International Relations (1949). Tabukashvili's poems and translations have been published since the 1940s. His plays were successfully staged in Georgian theatres: Ras Itkvis Khalkhi (What Will the People Say) (Kote Marjanishvili State Academic Drama Theatre, 1956, directed by L. Ioseliani; 1975 – directed by L. Nikoladze; Rustavi Drama Theatre, 1976, directed by A. Kutateladze), Denburgis Zari (The Bell of Denburg) (Shota Rustaveli State Academic Theatre, 1970, directed by G. Kavtaradze), Dabadeba (The Birth) (Rustavi Drama Theatre, 1977, directed by A. Kutateladze) and etc. Tabukashvili's play Amkhanagi Giorgi (Comrade George), which was published in 1971 (it was staged under the title Raikomis Mdivani (Secretary of the District Committee) at the Kote Marjanishvili State Academic Drama Theatre in 1953, directed by L. Ioseliani; at the Shota Rustaveli State Theatre — 1972, directed by R. Sturua) was an important phenomenon in Georgian dramaturgy.
Tabukashvili wrote screenplays for the following films: Tsarsuli Zapkhuli (Last Summer) (1959, directed by N. Nenova, G. Tsulaia), Jvartsmuli Kundzuli (Crucified Island) (1968, directed by Sh. Managadze), Mze Shemodgomisa (Autumn's Sun) (1973, directed by T. Palavandishvili), Reportaji Niderlandebidan (Reportage from the Netherlands) (1976, directed by G. Chubabria), Rats Davitskebit Ar Ibindeba (What Does Not Become Dark If You Forget) (1976, directed by G. Chubabria), Oragulis Bedi (The Fate of the Salmon) (1977, directed by G. Chubabria); As well as librettos for the operas: Mindia (composer O. Taktakishvili), Qadjana (composer M. Davitashvili) and etc. Tabukashvili translated Shakespeare's sonnets (1979 — Collection of Sonnets, 1988 — 100 Sonnets, and 2003 — Sonnets). In 2013, Tabukashvili's book Screenplays, Poems, Speeches, Diary, Stories, Memories was published.
As a screenwriter and film director, Tabukashvili made documentaries: Kvali Nateli (A Bright Trace) (1978; dedicated to M. Tamarashvili, whose grave was discovered by Tabukashvili); Kartvelebi Italiashi (Georgians in Italy), Alpuri Varskvlavi (Alpine Star) (1979); Vittorio Sella, Mtani Maghalni (High Mountains) (1980); Mikheil Khergiani (1981); Pirvelad Iko Sitkva (First There Was a Word) (1982); Purclebi Pranguli Dghiuridan (Pages from a French Diary) (1983); Sakartvelos Mechurchletukhutsesi (Royal Treasurer of Georgia) (1985; dedicated to the life of E. Takaishvili); The film duology Nadzartsvis Kvaldakval (In the Footsteps of the Robbery) (1986) and Shoreuli Siakhlove (Distant Proximity) (1987). These films highlight the position of the author himself, which fully expresses Tabukashvili's aesthetic and ethical views.
On Tabukashvili's initiative and with his direct participation, the remains of M. Tamarashvili were returned to Georgia (1978), as well as extremely important manuscripts, documents and photographs scattered throughout various libraries and archives around the world. Among them are photographs of Georgian monuments taken by V. Kikodze that are located on Turkish territory (700 slides); Photo Negatives of the funeral procession of Akaki Tsereteli taken by V. Ghambashidze, and others.
