Terjola Treasure

Terjola Treasure, a 13th-century silver coin hoard discovered between the villages of Tuzi and Sazano in Terjola Municipality in 1948. The treasure currently consists of 152 silver coins. The major part of it (139 pieces) belongs to the Seljuk Empire of Rum and is minted in the name of the following sultans: 1. Alā ad-Dīn Kayqubād I (1219–1239); 2. Ghiyath al-Din Kaykhusraw II (1237–1246); 3. Izz ad-Dīn Kaykāwus II (1246–1248); 4. Kaykāwus II, Kilij Arslan IV and Alāʾ ad-Dīn Kayqubād II (the period of the three brothers' co-reign – 1249–1257); 5. Rukn ad-Dīn Kilij Arslān IV (1257–1265). Most of them were minted in the two largest mints of the Sultanate of Rum – in Konya and Sivas.

The second part of the treasure consists of 9 Trebizond aspers of Manuel I Komnenos (1238–1263), 2 dirhams of Möngke Khan (1252–61), and each of two types of Qā'ānics and dirhams of David VII (also known as David Ulu) (1247–1270). The treasure was probably buried in the late 13th century, no later than 1278.
