F. Todua

Fridon Todua (b. January 9, 1944, Zugdidi – d. October 7, 2017, Tbilisi), radiologist, full member (2001) and First Vice-President (2004–2013) of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Academician-Secretary of the Physiological and Medical Department of the same Academy (2013), full member of the Medical Academy of Georgia (1995). Doctor of Medical Sciences (1984), professor (1987). He received the USSR State (1988) and Georgian State (1996) Prizes. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia (2008–2012).

In 1968, he graduated from the Tbilisi State Medical University, from 1968 to 1991, he worked at the A.V. Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery in Moscow, where he advanced from an ordinary scientific fellow to the head of the computed tomography department (the first one established by him in the USSR).

In 1990, he founded and headed the Scientific Research Institute of Clinical Medicine. In 1998–2017, he was the director of the residency training program of the Ministry of Health of Georgia. From 1999, he was the head of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine of Tbilisi State University.

Todua received the A. A. Vishnevsky (1979), A.V. Vishnevsky (1986) and A. Chachava (1994) prizes.

He received the European Order of Merit (1999), was awarded the Presidential Order of Excellence (2010), the Order of Malta (1999), the title of Chevalier of the Royal Court of Belgium (1999); the Order of St. Andrew (2000) and the A. Schweitzer Medal “For Humanism and Service to the People” (2003); received the Zaza Panaskerteli Gold Medal (2003) and the Zaza Panaskerteli Prize for the monograph “Non-invasive Radiological Diagnostics of Cerebrovascular Pathologies” (2008), the Medal of French Gratitude (2004), the Academician G. Mukhadze Medal (1993) and Prize (2010), the Ivane Javakhishvili Gold Medal (2004). He was a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (2010). In 2010, he was elected an honorary doctor of the Medical University of Graz (Austria), in 2012 – a member of the Russian Academy of Medical and Technical Sciences, and an honorary doctor of Baku State University.

Todua was a member of various associations, societies, federations and councils, President of the Georgian Association of Radiologists (1995), member of the Main Scientific Board of the Georgian Encyclopedia of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, etc.

Todua was the author of many scientific works, including 14 monographs. He received 5 copyright and 15 patent certificates for inventions.

He was awarded the “Order of Honor” (1996, 2006), the Order of Vakhtang Gorgasali (2009), the Golden Order of St. George (2014). He is an Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi (1998).
