Ibn al-Maristani

Ibn al-Maristani, Ubayd Allah ibn Ali ibn Nasr (b. 1145/1146 – d. Ocrober 11, 1203 (Settlement Jurkhabandi, near Nakhchivan), Arab scholar, muhaddith, historian, astrologer and physician. He pursued his work in the Abbasid Caliphate. He built the “House of Knowledge” with a book depository in Baghdad.

In October-November 1202, by order of Caliph al-Nasir, he was sent as an ambassador to the court of Queen Tamar. Together with him, the Georgian ambassador, who had been at al-Nasir’s court, also returned to Georgia. Ibn al-Maristani departed from Baghdad - from the palace of the vizier in compliance with all ceremonial norms. He was presented with a black robe and tailasan, a harnessed horse and a sword. The Caliph sent a letter to Tamar, the content of which is unknown. After completing his mission in Tbilisi, Ibn al-Maristani departed for Azerbaijan and died on the way near Nakhchivan.
