Ioseliani Nana

Nana Ioseliani (b. February 12, 1962, Tbilisi), athlete, chess player, Master of Sports (1976), International Master (1978), Chess Grandmaster (1979), Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1989).

Ioseliani graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Tbilisi State University (1983). She was Tbilisi Champion (1975), USSR Champion among women (1981, 1982, 1986, 1987), two-time European Champion among girls (1978, 1979).

Ioseliani participated in the following cycles of the Women's World Championship: in 1978–1981 – Interzonal Tournament, Rio de Janeiro (1979, 1st place); Candidates Matches (8 participants): against Z. Verőci (6:3); against N. Gaprindashvili (7:7); against N. Alexandria (2.5: 6.5). Candidates Matches (1981– 1984): against Liu Shilan (6:3); against L. Semenova (4.5:5.5). Interzonal Tournament in 1986–1988: Tuzla (1987; 1^st place); Candidates match-tournament, Tskaltubo (1988; 1^st–2^nd places). Additional match against E. Akhmilovskaya (3:2). World Championship match, Telavi (1988): against M. Chiburdanidze (7.5:8.5). Candidates Tournament in 1989–1991, Borjomi (1990; 3^rd–4^th places). Interzonal Tournament in 1991–1993: Subotica (1991; 3^rd–4^th places). Candidates Tournament: Shanghai (1992; 2^nd–3^rd places); Candidates Match: Monte Carlo (1993), against J. Polgar 4:4 (1:1, 1:1), Ioseliani won by draw. World Championship match: Monte Carlo (1993), against Xie Jun (2.5:8.5). Candidates Match Tournament in 1993–1995: Tilburg (1994; 7^th–8^th places).

Ioseliani won the World Chess Olympiads 5 times: in 1980 and 1982 – as part of the USSR team, and in 1992, 1994, 1996 – as part of the Georgian team; is the second (2000) and third (1998) prize-winner, as well as the winner of the European Team Chess Championship as part of the Georgian team (Pula, 1997).

Ioseliani was awarded the Order of Honor (1994) and the Order of Vakhtang Gorgasali, 2nd rank (2001).
